Bilingual Parent Educator…when I first heard about this position, I was intrigued by the job title. Parent educator? As a young adult and recent college graduate (Wahoo-wa), I’m just getting used to supporting myself! Who am I to be telling parents how to care for their new baby? Fortunately, I have found that Family Lifeline supports collaborative partnerships with our families and continuing education for parent educators like me. As a new member of this team, I am excited and humbled by the opportunity to learn about early child development and serve in the Richmond area.
Three things I bring to the table:
- I think parents rock. It’s not an easy job and I have so much respect for what they do. There are many ways to be a good parent, and each individual style has its own strengths and beauty. Just watch “Parenthood” with Steve Martin and you’ll see what I mean.
- Kids are the light of my life (even when they’re being crazy—it keeps things interesting). They remind me how to have fun and not sweat the small stuff. I have worked with children of all ages in my capacity as a tennis coach, tutor, and residential camp counselor. Some of my most rewarding experiences come from working with people to gain new skills and develop strong character, even in the face of adversity.
- I love speaking Spanish and celebrating Latin American culture. As I begin working with families, I look forward to connecting them to all Richmond has to offer. My hope is that as we engage in dialogue about children’s health and family wellbeing, I will grow a deeper understanding of our city’s diverse set of needs, wishes, and personal and cultural narratives.
In my free time, I enjoy exploring the city’s natural and urban landscape. When I’m not running around town in search of a delicious horchata or tasty pupusa, you are likely to catch me salsa dancing (not always gracefully) or reading Julia Alvarez. Thank you for welcoming me to the Family Lifeline team; I look forward to getting to know you all better!
