- Identifying elders who are in need of socialization and support
- Recruiting, screening, and training volunteers
- Making successful, mutually beneficial matches between volunteers and elders
- Educating volunteers and elders about available community resources
- Providing frequent, on-going support to both volunteers and elders
- Offering Phone Buddy connections to elders waiting for a friendly visiting match
Participant Eligibility
Elder referrals are needed – Click here* if you know an elder who:
- Is at least 60 years old and lives independently
- Reports feeling lonely or socially isolated
- Wants a friendly visitor for weekly visits for one year
- Is not diagnosed with a terminal illness, Alzheimer’s, or dementia
Volunteers are needed – Click here* if you:
- Want to make a difference by developing a friendship with an isolated elder;
- Can visit an elder weekly, for at least an hour at a time, for one year or can call an elder every other week while they wait for a friendly visiting match
- Are willing to listen attentively
- Enjoy engaging in conversation
- Are sensitive to the needs of isolated elders facing difficult life circumstances
- Are willing to participate in the application and reporting process, including: Completing an application form, Supplying two references, Passing a background check, Participating in a volunteer training, Reporting hours visited or called on a regular basis.
